15/5 for November 29

Whoa! The Showcase is tomorrow!

I've tinkered with the website some more, lightening the color and graphics and categorizing video tutorials for easy access.

Here are the last three tasks I have to complete:
1. Completing the final version of the formative evaluation report
2. Completing the final cost analysis for the project
3. Writing the accessibility paragraph
4. Getting the project to Dr. Ike in CD form (which I plan to do on Tuesday, December 5)

I will have these items up on the website on Friday, Monday at the latest. This is a good feeling -- drawing the project development to a close. Now I'm going to be busy advertising this resource to my fellow faculty and staff members on the Athens Academy campus.

15/5 for November 16

Hooray -- the Online Training Modules are completed!

Here's the portal: http://www.athensacademy.org/library/MovableType/index.htm

The Video Simulations, the Print Manuals, and the Featured Sites section are ready to roll! The Studio Dress Rehearsal is tomorrow, and I'm ready to share the project.

All that is left to complete is the final report for the Formative Evaluation (alpha and beta testing already completed) and the Final Cost Figures.

15/5 for November 9

Wow--a lot has been going on lately!

1. I've added a category (right-hand navigation bar) for the Formative Evaluation Plan and have attached a document outlining the methods for assessing the effectiveness of the training modules and the ROI for the client.

Please take a look!

2. By the weekend, I'll have finished all of the video simulations for the rest of the training topics I'm covering within the scope of this studio project (rebuilding files, modifying text, adding links, changing password, changing blog styles).

3. I've logged in my final hours on the 6210 project.

*Early in the semester, I researched other online educational media to make suggestions for modules the team would want to create for their online FFA handbook. That counted for two hours of work.
*This week, I proofread the documents to identify grammatical and style errors that needed to be corrected. Please see the attached editing suggestions (highlighted in yellow) I made for the 6210 team project: Download file

4. I've logged in all of my service hours, too. This has been an ongoing effort throughout the fall. Marion Marvel is the contact person here at the Academy for my service. I've worked with several faculty members on the following projects:

*I've worked with a teacher to transfer movies made in MovieMaker to DVD (rather than saving them as wav files).
*I've worked with an administrator to capture graphics on paper documents and load them into Word templates to be used by admin staff.
*I've trained a teacher in the ways to display photos of class activities effectively on the web.
I've trained admin staff in the use of Dreamweaver to create web pages.
*I'm also going to attend an Excel training session on Thursday, November 9 and will create some video simulation training modules for teachers interested in using Excel with their students.

15/5 for November 2

Wow, I've been busy!

1. I've worked on several service projects around the school, helping teachers with modifying media files and burning them to DVD, creating document templates with graphics, etc. I'm going to an Excel workshop next week, and then I'm going to create some training modules for using spreadsheets.

2. I've gotten the audio to work on my laptop with a new microphone I purchased. I've imported audio into five of the training modules. Now all I have to do is create the last five of the phase one training modules in time for the showcase.

3. I did two sessions of beta test observations with ten faculty members. I observed the teachers and administrators using the training modules, and I also asked participants to fill out a survey. See the attached survey: Download file

4. As a result of those sessions (during which I got some great feedback and useful, constructive criticism), I am modifying the web site according to the faculty recommendations.

5. I still have to post cost estimates. I'm going to use the formula in the text and will post this next week.

15/5 for October 19

I've been consulting with the client this week after showing them the prototype and the additional demos I've created, and what they've requested is:

1. Making sure the demos are brief so faculty/staff can "get in and get out" quickly -- sort of an "in the moment" training scenario.

2. Therefore, we're dropping the interactive component and just making quick demos for each of the training module topics.

3. They like the "featured article" section on the web portal that will point teachers toward others who are using their webs creatively and effectively.

I'm adjusting the hours required for each demo to 2 hours each. It's more time consuming when you consider the standardization of "style" and text, etc.

I'm trying a new microphone tomorrow to see if I can record. If it doesn't work well, I'll go to the UGA studio.

15/5 for October 12

I'm catching up on my project after returning to Athens in the wake of a family death. Here is what I've been focusing on over the last week:

1. Creating a website for the online training portal: http://www.athensacademy.org/library/MovableType/index.htm

2. Meeting with Dr. Ike to review the prototype (linked on the website under the Video Simulations heading and titled "Logging On")

3. Suggested modifications: Making "featured articles" on the website to show teachers' best practices with their blogs (rather than including more articles about step-by-step procedures). This will serve as a motivational tool, sparking teachers' creativity.

4. Wrestling with the sound recording device on my laptop -- to no avail. Dr. Ike suggested I use the recording booth at Aderhold and then import the high quality recordings into my Captivate demos and simulations.

5. To do: record sound, learn how to move beyond the Captivate demos to create interactive simulations for the learners

15/5 for September 21 (week six)

This week I have procrastinated and left a good bit of work to do for the weekend (completion of flowchart, storyboard, and prototype).

I have a meeting with Dr. Choi on Tuesday afternoon at which I will share my prototype. I plan to show depth rather than breadth, featuring just one lesson component but covering it fully.

I have collected screen shots of the different steps in the training script for one task (creating a new entry in MovableType). I will use these in a PowerPoint slide show to show the progression of the simulation in my prototype.

I'll be doing some Captivate training, too.

September 13, 2006

15/5 for September 14 (week five)

This week I've been gathering more data on my learner group, and I'll add this new information to my learner profile.

I've also been working on storyboards and scripts for the tasks identified by the client as necessary for the training.

The clients have signed off on both the task list and the learner analysis and the early sketch of the project. They are quite pleased with the choice to use Captivate and hope that this will transfer to further training modules.

I have scheduled some time to work on Captivate to prepare myself for the multimedia product creation phase after the storyboard is ready.

I've also been exploring several cost projection estimates for other people's projects to get an accurate figure for my own cost analysis.

As far as service hours go, I have offered my services to teachers planning tech integration projects (possibly training a middle school teacher in the use of Moviemaker, training teachers and students to use Microsoft Publisher, etc.).

15/5 for September 7 (week four)

This week, I've concentrated on breaking down the client's stated learning goals into a task inventory which will direct the script of the simulation.

See the "Task Inventory" by following the "Project Summary" link at right.

I've also identified the learner group with the help of the client, the Media and Tech department at Athens Academy.

See the "Learner Group" by following the "Project Summary" link at right.

In addition, I've read the supporting Instructional Design Model texts from Dr. Choi and chapters 1-3 in the class text. I've been reading with an eye toward the application of particular ID models for my MovableType training module.

See these summaries/applications by following the "Text Chapter Summaries" link at right.

August 29, 2006

15/5 for August 31 (week three)

This week, I've met with my clients, the Media and Technology staff at Athens Academy, to determine the scope of the project and to identify the project's key Subject Matter Expert, Ms. Beth Rodgers.

To begin work on the MovableType simulation training module, I've done the following:
1. I wrote an overview of the project and submitted it to clients for their approval.
1. I collected the training manual Ms. Rodgers produced for use of MovableType by the school's faculty and staff.
2. I ordered the Captivate software I'll use to produce the simulation.
3. I've participated in several face-to-face MovableType training sessions with Academy teachers.
4. I've identified faculty and staff who will assist with the review and evaluation of the module.

So far, everything is falling into place. My next steps will be to train myself on the Captivate program and write a script (using Ms. Rodgers' training manual) for the simulation.
