Athens Academy Academic Team

On Saturday, March 24th, the Athens Academy Academic team departed from school premises at 5:30 in the morning with very bleary eyes for a long day of competition at Bleckley County High School in Cochran, GA. We were there to compete for the Single A State Championship. After a very very rocky first two matches (we won one and lost one), we went on a tear for the final three games, finishing the prelims 4-1 and advancing to the playoffs with the 1 seed. We beat Paideia 330-200 in the quarterfinals, then beat whitefield in the semifinals by the score of 460-140. In the championship, we faced off against the Walker School, which we easily dispatched with a final score of 350-170. Thanks to these performances, Athens Academy is the current state champion and was rewarded handsomely for their hard work with a massive trophy!

On Saturday, November 12th the Athens Academy Academic Team went to Collins Hill for their mirror of the Harvard Fall Tournament. The team placed 4th out of 18, and team captain Jason Fern was 2nd in scoring of all individuals. The other team members included Edward Tie (60th), Gordon Zhang (62nd), Saad Bashir (72nd), and Omer Arpinar (76th). The following weekend, November 19th, the Academic team went to Brookwood, where they tied for ninth in a field of 84. The final tournament of the semester was held December 3rd at Norcross, and the team placed 2nd out of 30, including an upset over the number 10 team in the nation! 

As of the end of the first semester, the Athens Academy team is currently 36th in the nation, and has qualified for the National Scholastic Championship in St Louis, run by the Partnership for Academic Excellence. Hopefully, the second semester will be just as bountiful, if not more.

Athens Academy Academic Team recently participated in Kris Durham Memorial Hybrid Tournament at Cedar Shoals HS on April 23, 2011 and we placed third. Our students -- Jason Fern, Tavish Gantz, Emily Paneral, and Daniel West (A Team) and Nick Brown, Shida Chen, and Edward Tie (B Team) -- competed in an exemplary manner of grace, skill, and decorum. In the words of Huggy Bear, a la Snoop Dogg in Starsky & Hutch, they "play it out like [we] lay it out" at Athens Academy.

The A Team placed in the top three of the "student-only teams" and Jason Fern was the top point generator among all the participants in their division. Team B, only three players strong (two players strong for the last two rounds!) also played well.

Our team co-captains are Tavish Gantz (junior) and Jason Fern (sophomore).

Team Members: Please attend practice sessions whenever you are free after school from 3:20-4:00 pm regardless what day it is and whether you have AP Tutorial. One of the captains, either Tavish or Jason, will be in the Reading Room every day (M-F, except on school holidays) to hold practice sessions with whoever is present. This allows every team member to have a chance to practice at least once a week. Attendance to practice sessions determines eligibility to represent Athens Academy Academic Team in tournaments.
