AA Middle School Teams 2008

After a great first week of practice, except for the injury to Conley Messer who we will miss on the court very much, Coach Anna and Coach Olson have set the teams for the season. While these teams were put together with many different thoughts and ideas we feel both teams will have great opportunities for success throughout the season. It is very difficult to determine overall ability after 4 days of practice so there may be a change or two depending on the next few matches but we will keep you posted. I also want to thank the 7th graders for jumping right in and trying to learn so much info in such a short time. The match schedule has been updated on the master calender and please feel free to contact us if there are any concerns or questions. Please keep in mind the possibility of a change or two in the next week.

Varsity: Play for the Cure

hdrlogosgk.gif

The Varsity team will participate in the Play for the Cure playday at Heritage High School on Saturday, August 23rd. Proceeds from this playday will support the Susan G. Komen Foundation, whose promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.

This promise was made by Nancy G. Brinker, as she promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.

In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, we have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

During the 2007 Georgia High School Volleyball Season, Harrison High School began a local effort using volleyball as a vehicle to raise monies for this to support the end to this horrible disease affecting women's health. For more information about Play for the Cure events in Georgia, please visit http://www.playforthecuregeorgia.come

The Varsity team will need to arrive at the Spartan Center at 7:30 am on Saturday morning. We will stop at Chick-Fil-A near Interstate 20 in Conyers prior to our arrival at Heritage High School. We will play six matches during the day, spanning from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. For a detailed schedule of events, please download the following document.

JV: Oconee County Playdate

new%20pictures%20033.jpg

Our first JV matches are tomorrow!!!

Due to school bus availability because of before school inspections, we are NOT going to carpool as a team to the playdate tomorrow. Instead, we are asking each athlete to meet at the Oconee County High School Gym at 10:15 AM Saturday morning. Please make sure each of you has a solid breakfast tomorrow morning (especially since we play several matches in a row). Also, drink plenty of fluids (non-caffeinated) between now and tomorrow morning and get a good night's sleep so we are well rested and hydrated!

Our match schedule is as follows:

11:15 Athens Academy. vs. Oconee County
12:30 Athens Academy vs. Greenbriar
2:00 Athens Academy vs. St. Pius
3:15 Athens Academy vs. Salem

We are still in need of parent volunteers to help us with scorekeeping and line judging for the day. So, please be willing to help out. There will be lots of help and training, especially since this is everyone's first tournament of the year.

If you have questions, please contact Coach E. We are looking forward to a great day of volleyball!

See you tomorrow!

Our two fearless seniors have their work cut out for them leading a group of primarily underclassmen this year. They don't look too worried in this picture taken at camp, do they???

Varsity/JV: Tryouts

new%20pictures%20048.jpg
We had a great summer . . . a great time a camp . . . a great time at Lake Lanier . . . and a great tryout!!!! The only thing that could be next is an AWESOME season . . . and of course, more team pictures, complete with the entire coaching staff and a growing Coach Nik-!

I speak for our entire coaching staff when I say that we are so pleased with this year's tryouts. We saw each of you giving 110% effort with a great attitude 100% of the time. Certainly, this type of effort will help us re-establish the Spartan Volleyball Prorgam as a perennial powerhouse in the A/AA division.

As we have already discussed, our numbers force us into a position where we must keep a small Varsity and JV in order to make sure that both teams have the needed players and positions to be successful. With that being said, we are still very excited about the opportunity for all of our players to gain some Varsity experience this year, and we would like to continue considering the possibility of inviting JV members to join the Varsity in the post-season.

While we are not prepared to make post-season decisions now, we believe that the possibility of continuing into the post-season with the Varsity squad should be a motivational tool to spur each individual towards reaching their potential. I have already scheduled meetings with each 9th grader before week's end to discuss personal goals for the season, role establishment within the program, and to speak personally to each athlete about gaining Varsity experience.

Below is a list of the times for each athlete to meet with Coach Ez and myself. Please come prepared with a list of personal goals for the season and collect your thoughts on what you hope for your role to be within our program:

Wed - 8:00 am (Ansley)
Wed - 11:00 am (Jamella)
Wed - 1:30 pm (Hannah Crane)
Wed - 4:00 pm (Mary)
Wed - 4:15 pm (Sarah Chuboff)
Thurs - 8:00 am (Sara Beisswenger)
Thurs - 11:00 am (Madison - we need to reschedule your time because Coach Ez cannot meet with us)
Thurs - 1:30 (Hannah Hays)
Thurs - 4:00 (Elizabeth)
Fri - 8:00 (Dakota)

Varsity members - please see me tomorrow about scheduling individual meeting times.

Now, for the teams. Please download the following document for a listing of the 2008 Varsity and JV teams.
