The Athens Academy girls cross country team raced to a victory in their first meet of the season. Hosted by Athens Academy, the race was a 3 kilometer race with five schools attending. The Lady Spartans placed 5 runners in the top 10 to narrowly defeat Providence Christian School. Top runners for Athens Academy were Meagan Marshburn (3rd;13:32), Sara Wetzstein (5th;13:40), Esther Deaton (8th; 13:51), Mary Hadley Williams (9th;13:56), and Margaret DuBose (10th;14:17). Providence Christian was led by Allison Preg (2nd;13:17), Jordan Kelly (4th;13:35), Sarah Sharpe (7th;13:46), Joanna Preg (11th;14:33), and Beth Morris (14th;14:36). Apalachee, led by Hannah Moler (12th;14:34), finished third with 88 points and Morgan County, led by Camilla Dartnell (13th; 14:36), finished fourth with 92 points. Stephanie Murphy (13:05) of Hebron Christian won the race, but Hebron did not have enough runners to have a team score.
In the boys race Providence swept the top 5 places to post a perfect score with Elias Crist winning in 10:47. Following Crist were Eric Mills (10:53), Stephen Dubbert (10:58), Keith Kreutzer (11:07) and Jonathan Preg (11:10). Hebron was paced by Cody Gardner who finished 6th in 11:26 as they took second with 61 points, edging the host Spartans who finished with 68. Apalachee, led by Dillon Moon (8th, 11:37), was 4th with 93 points and Morgan County recorded only four finishers and thus did not post a team score. The Spartans were led by Ned McGregor (9th, 11:43) and Ben Terry (11th, 11:54). Rounding out the scoring for Athens Academy were Tom Greene (14th, 12:06), Brant Batzer (15th, 12:07) and David Millard (21st, 12:28). The Spartans will next compete in Rome at the traditional season opening Berry Invitational on Sept 6th and will be home again the following Saturday as they host a brand new event, the Spartan Ekiden, a 7.5 mile coed, cross country relay race.
