April 28, 2008

Our thoughts and prayers are with our phenomenal freshman Henry Terrell and his family as Henry recovers from emergency surgery today. We all wish him a quick and complete recovery.

Congratulations to Coach Kane on reaching the state baseball play-offs for his ninth consecutive year as head coach.

The Spartan baseball team plays with heart. They overcome all obstacles and find a way to achieve their best. Tonight was no exception as they came from behind for an exciting, extra inning victory against two outstanding pitchers and a talented team.

Highlights:
• Pitching:
o Patrick Jansen once again gave his all on the mound, pitching 7 2/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits, while striking out six
o Patrick struck out the side in the eighth inning
• Offense:
o The Spartans amassed 7 runs on 12 hits in nine innings
o McKay Matthews was 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 3 stolen bases
o Matt Woodruff was 2/5 with a key double to tie the game at 5-5
o Patrick Jansen was 2/3 with a soaring 3 run homerun and was intentionally walked twice
o Evans Wellborn had the winning hit in the ninth inning
o Hunter Stiles was 1 for 4 with an RBI
o Thomas Sanders was 1 for 4

o Mark Sanders turned an unassisted double play in the first inning
o Thomas continues to play first base exceptionally well, showing an outstanding vertical reach
o The Spartans turned a second double play in the seventh inning going from Matthews to M. Sanders to T. Sanders
o James Waugh came in defensively and fielded the last out of the ninth inning perfectly

Scoring:
• First inning:
o Matt singled up the middle (the Eagles pitcher then threw to 1st base four times, showing well deserved respect for Matt’s speed)
o Patrick singled, putting men on first and second
o Hunter singled to left field sending Matt to the plate
 One run scored
• Fifth inning:
o McKay singled and stole second
o Matt reached on a error
o Patrick took the second pitch and planted it deep in the pine trees beyond the right center field fence for a towering home run
 Three runs scored
• Seventh inning:
o McKay singled down the left field line and stole second
o Matt tied the score with a double to right center, sending McKay home
 One run scored
• Ninth inning:
o Once again, McKay led off the inning with a single and stole second (what a great pattern to be in!)
o After Patrick was walked intentionally, McKay attempted to steal third and came home on a throwing error by the catcher as Patrick advanced to third
o With the count one and one, Evans slammed a single up the middle for the game winning hit
 Two runs scored

It was an electrifying game with the Spartans coming out victorious and claiming their ninth consecutive state play-off spot. The Spartans had to overcome adversity in losing a key member of their team (Henry Terrell) and a questionable call in the 8th inning when Mark Sanders attempted to score.

The Spartans have the best fan support. Once again the stands were full and the enthusiasm contagious throughout the game.

The Spartans will take on Jefferson for their last game of the regular season on Friday at 5:00 p.m. As Coach Chuboff said, “we are going to have to wrap the players in bubble wrap to keep everyone else healthy for Friday!”

Hope to see you there!

Final Score: Athens Academy 7, Athens Christian 6 (in 9 innings)

Athens Academy: (14-8 overall) (11-6 region)

The Spartans and Wolverines simply played a great baseball game on a beautiful night at Spartan Field. Patrick Jansen was stellar on the mound, as was the Prince Avenue pitcher, Buck Harris. Both teams came ready to play and the game was hotly contested until James Colquitt snagged a fly ball to left field for the final out.

Highlights:

o After a lead-off single in the first, Hunter threw a strike to second, gunning down a runner trying to steal.

o All nine defensive Spartans played their positions to perfection

o Mark came to the plate and pulled back on his first bunt attempt

o With 2 strikes, Thomas slapped a double to deep center, scoring Everett, who was running at full speed at the crack of the bat
o As if the slash wasn’t exciting enough, McKay came to the plate knowing the suicide squeeze was on… he laid down the perfect bunt, which stunned the defense allowing Mark to score and McKay to reach second on pure hustle
o Matt sent Thomas home with the final run of the game with a hard hit ball to second

Jefferson will be #1

Lakeview will be #2

ACS or AA will be #3

ACS or AA will be #4

If one team wins and the other loses, the winner will be the 3 seed. If both teams either win or lose, Athens Academy will be the 3 seed because they split head to head, neither team beat Jefferson or Lakeview, but Athens has the better 2nd half record and they won the 2nd game.

The Hebron, SC winner will be 5th, loser 6th.

Prince will be 7

Commerce will be 8

Towns will be 9

Tallulah will be 10

Region Standings:
April 28, 2008
Tie breakers:

Coming into the final two games, here is what we know:

1-Jefferson is the #1 seed no matter what they do from here on.

2-Lakeview is either #2 or #3. They have a 1 game lead over ACS with 3 to play for both of them. If Lakeview maintains that lead going into Friday and wins against ACS, saturday's game may not be needed. The only reason it would be is if AA wins both to possibly get into 3rd...The game on Saturday if played will count as the 2nd game played.

3-ACS is either #2, #3 or #4. They must beat Lakeview twice and beat AA to get back in 2nd seed or have some help.

4-Athens Academy can still finish #3, #4 or lower. In order for AA to make the playoffs, they can win 1 game or have SC lose 1 game. If both teams win both games, then AA would still go to the playoffs if PAC wins both of their games. This would force a 3 way tie in which AA has the most head to head wins.

5-Social Circle must win both games, have AA lose both games and have Prince lose 1 game to prevent the 3 way tie. SC would go in a tie with AA because they split, going to tie breaker #2. SC beat ACS to go 1-5 in teams above, AA would have gone 0-6 if they lose both games.

6-Hebron cannot make the playoffs because of the 2nd loss to AA. They can go 10-8 in which case they would eliminate SC and Prince. However, AA would hold the tie breaker in winning the 2nd game. We are going to have to count the 2nd game played because this game was rescheduled before the season and was not a rain out. We just didn't think about this before as a scenario, but the rule clearly states that the 2nd game played will break all ties. We didn't specify reschedules or anything else. Therefore, we must count the actual 2nd game played. The same thing will apply with Lakeview and ACS.

7-PAC also cannot make the playoffs. They can also go 10-8 and force a 3 way tie and kick out SC. SC or Hebron would have to eliminate the other on the last day. However, they were swept by AA and would be kicked out of the tie breaker in a two or three way tie.

Here are the updated standings: Good luck to everyone!
