The Spartans played a close, hard fought game against the Purple Hurricanes with lots of hits and runs.

Highlights:
• Tag Galvin was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s
• Henry Terrell was 2 for 4 with 1 RBI
• Evans Wellborn went 1 for 3 with a monster homerun to left center, scored three times and had 3 RBI’s
• James Colquitt and McKay Matthews hit the ball hard with each having 1 hit
• James made a couple outstanding catches in left field
• Matt Woodruff went 1 for 3 with a triple to the right field fence

Pitching:
• Tag Galvin pitched the first 4 innings
• Henry Terrell pitched the 5th-7th innings

Scoring:
• Third inning:
o McKay walked and stole second. Matt walked and Patrick Jansen was hit by a pitch loading the bases.
o Evans Wellborn walked with the bases loaded, sending McKay home
o Hunter Stiles singled to right scoring Matt.
o Tag Galvin singled scoring Patrick (Everett Young ran for Tag)
o With the bases loaded, Mark Sanders walked scoring Evans with the 4th run of the inning.

• Fourth inning:
o Matt reached on an error by the third baseman and stole second
o Patrick doubled, sending Matt home
o Evans reached on a error by the first baseman scoring Patrick
o Evans went to second on a hard hit ball by Hunter
o Tag singled up the middle, scoring Evans
o Everett came in to run for Tag and stole second base
o Henry singled, sending Everett home for the 4th run of the inning

• Fifth inning:
o James led off the inning with a single to short, showcasing his outstanding speed (he was then thrown out attempting to steal second on a very close call)
o McKay singled and stole second
o McKay came home when the first baseman couldn’t handle a hard hit ball by Patrick who was safe at first
o Evans Wellborn took the next pitch over the fence in left center for a powerful two run homer (the 10th and 11th runs of the game)

The Spartans had 11 hits and several hard hit balls were caught by the defense. Both teams made some excellent defensive plays. Neither team would give up. Matt tripled in the seventh, but the Hurricanes had the last at bat and took advantage by scoring the winning run. The Spartans will travel to Athens Christian on Tuesday, April 1st, for a 4:30 game. The Spartans picked up a big region win as they defeated Commerce at home.

Highlights:
• Patrick Jansen was 2 for 3 with a homerun and 5 RBI’s
• Tag Galvin was 2 for 4 with a double
• Hunter Stiles was 1 for 3 with a double
• Russ DeVore picked up the win going 5 innings and scattering 7 hits, while striking out 5

Scoring:
• Third inning:
o Matt Woodruff reached on a fielder’s choice and went to second on a balk
o Patrick Jansen came up to bat with Matt on second and blasted the second pitch deep into the pines in right field for a two run homerun

• Fourth inning:
o Mark Sanders walked and went to second on a wild pitch
o McKay Matthews, Matt and Patrick had consecutive walks, with Patrick earning an RBI as Mark came home

• Fifth inning:
o Tag Galvin doubled, went to third on consecutive walks by Mark and James Colquitt and scored on a wild pitch
o McKay and Matt also walked with Mark scoring on Matt’s walk
o Patrick singled sending James and McKay home
o Matt stole home as Patrick stole second

• Sixth inning:
o Tag reached on an error, went to second on a wild pitch, third on a 6-3 putout and came home on another wild pitch

Defensively:
• With bases loaded in the fourth inning, Evans Wellborn stopped a hard ground ball and stepped on the base for the third out of the inning

Pitching:
• Russ, McKay and Henry struck out nine Tigers

The Spartans made the most of their five hits and 11 walks to beat a Commerce team that hit the ball well. Special thanks to Tom Reigle for keeping the scorebook for the game. The Spartans will travel to Monroe Area for a 5:30 game on Thursday, March 27th. Hope to see you there!

Patrick Jansen was impressive on the mound as he went 3 1/3 innings before allowing a hit against Prince Avenue in a well played game.

Highlights:

• McKay Matthews: 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored, 2 doubles, a stolen base and 1 RBI… he showed outstanding hustle in the fourth inning making the most of a well hit ball down the third base line
• Patrick Jansen: 1 for 3 with a double and1 RBI
• Hunter Stiles: 2 for 3 with 1 RBI
• Tag Galvin: 2/2 with 1 RBI
• Mark Sanders: 2/3 with 1 RBI
• Patrick Jansen pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up 3 hits and no earned runs… he went 3 1/3 innings before giving up his first hit
• McKay Matthews came in relief, finishing the game and giving up only one hit
• Defensively, Mark Sanders was involved in seven defensive plays (5 assists and 2 put-outs)

Scoring:
• First inning:
o McKay led off the game with a strong double to left field and went to third on a wild pitch.
o Patrick Jansen was hit by a pitch. Thomas Sanders came in to run for him and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A walk to Evans Wellborn loaded the bases. McKay scored on a single by Hunter Stiles and Thomas scored when Tag Galvin also was hit by a pitch.
o Evans scored on an error by the shortstop.

• Second inning:
o McKay walked, stole second, went to third on a fly to center and came home on an error

• Third inning:
o Hunter led off the inning with a single. Everett Young came in to run for him, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tag, and scored on a Mark Sanders single

• Fourth inning:
o McKay led off with a double, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Woodruff and came home on a double by Patrick Jansen
o Thomas Sanders came in to run for Patrick and scored on a single by Tag Galvin

The Spartans picked up a huge win in the region with their victory over the Wolverines. It was great to see Brett Satterfield, who was home for spring break from the Air Force Academy, at the game. The Spartans once again put a well coached, fundamentally solid team on the field and reaped the benefits with an impressive win.

Highlights:
• Mark Sanders: 3/3 with 3 runs scored, 2 RBI’s
• Matt Woodruff: 3/4 with 2 runs scored, a triple, 2 stolen bases and 3 RBI’s
• Patrick Jansen: 1/1 with 2 RBI’s
• James Colquitt: 1/ 2 with two runs scored and 2 RBI’s
• Tag Galvin: 1/3 with a double and 2 RBI’s

Pitching:
• Russ DeVore went the first two innings
• Henry Terrell went the next two innings, picking up the win
• Tag Galvin pitched the fifth inning, facing only three batters

Scoring:
• First Inning:
o Patrick Jansen was hit by a pitch in the first and scored on a throwing error

• Second Inning:
o Mark Sanders singled, stole second and came home on Matt’s triple
o McKay Matthews singled, stole second and also came home on Matt’s triple
o Matt tripled and scored after three consecutive walks by Patrick, Evans Wellborn and Hunter Stiles (who got the RBI)
o Tag Galvin doubled sending Patrick and Evans home
o Mark Sanders doubled sending Thomas Sanders (running for Hunter) and Tag across home plate

o McKay reached on an error and Mark hustled home for the 8th run of the inning

• Third inning:
o Hunter led off the inning with a walk (Thomas came in as a courtesy runner)
o Henry Terrell was hit by a pitch. Everett Young came in as a courtesy runner for the pitcher
o Mark slugged his third consecutive hit, loading the bases
o Thomas came home while Everett Mark moved up a base on a wild pitch
o James fired a line drive to center field for a single, scoring Everett and Mark
o James stole second base, went to third on an error and came home on another error.
o Patrick singled sending McKay and Matt home (who had both reached base on errors) for the 5th and 6th runs of the inning

• Fourth inning:
o Gaines Hill (in for Hunter), Tag Galvin and Henry reached first on consecutive walks
o Russ DeVore came in to run for Tag and James Waugh came in to run for Henry
o Everett Young hit a long sacrifice fly to right field sending Gaines home for the final run of the game

The Spartans picked up their fifth win of the season and the second in the Region. It was fun to see Bucky Woodruff at the game. The Spartans will play at Prince Avenue next Monday, March 24th. Hope to see you there!

The Spartans may be young but they play with heart and produced a solid, spirited effort against a strong Jefferson team.

Offensively:
• The Spartans scored two runs on 6 hits
o Matt Woodruff:1 for 4
o Henry Terrell: 1 for 3, 1 RBI
o Mark Sanders: 2 for 3, 1 RBI
o Tag Galvin: 1 for 3
o James Colquitt: 1 for 3

Scoring:
• Fourth inning:
o Patrick Jansen walked, stole second and came home on a Henry Terrell single
• Seventh inning:
o Tag led off the inning with a strong single to center and scored on Mark Sanders’ double (both hits were off Jefferson’s ace, who came in relief in the seventh inning)

Defensively:
• Matt threw a perfect strike to home plate in the sixth inning nailing a Jefferson player trying to score on a single to left center.

Pitching:
• Patrick pitched the first five innings, giving up five hits and striking out eight, while only walking two
• McKay Matthews pitched the last inning allowing three hits and not walking a batter

It was a close, hard fought game. The Spartans come to play and were a joy to watch.

Highlights:

• Evans Wellborn went 2 for 4 with a towering homerun to left; had 3 RBI’s and stole home
• Hunter Stiles went 3 for 5 with a double and threw three runners out trying to steal second (against a team known for their speed)
• Henry Terrell went two for five with a three run blast to left field along with a double. He came in for relief in the sixth and on the first pitch got the batter to hit into a double play.
• McKay Matthews went 2 for five with 2 RBI’s and had a sensational catch in the third going deep into left field for the out.
• Russ DeVore threw all strikes in the first inning and picked up his second win of the season scattering seven hits

The Spartans were victorious in their first region game of the 2008 season defeating Tallulah Falls with many fans in the stands.

Pitching:
• Patrick Jansen pitched all four innings only allowing one unearned run, striking out six while walking three.

Offensively:
First inning: 15 Spartans came to the plate! 9 Scored!!
• McKay Matthews led off the game with a smashing triple to right center and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Woodruff
• Matt stole second base and went to third on a passed ball
• Patrick Jansen walked and advanced to second on a passed ball
• Matt and Patrick scored on a single by Evans Wellborn
• Evans stole second and went to third on a passed ball
• Hunter Stiles walked and advanced to second on a passed ball
• Tag Galvin reached first on an error, sending Evans home and Hunter to third
• Hunter scored on a passed ball
• Mark Sanders walked
• James Colquitt came to the plate with men on second and third and took the first pitch to deep left field for his first home run of the season (a three run shot!)
• McKay came to bat for the second time the inning and reached first on an error
• Matt, Evans and Hunter walked, with Hunter earning an RBI as McKay crossed home plate
Third Inning:
• Patrick, Evans and Hunter had back to back to back singles with Patrick scoring on Hunter’s single
• Henry Terrell singled sending Evans across the plate for the 11th run of the game
Fourth inning:
• McKay led off with a single
• Matt reached first on an error
• Gaines Hill walked loading the bases
• Evans walked sending McKay home
• James Waugh reached on an error scoring Matt
• Zack Kittle reached on a fielder’s choice scoring Gaines
• Everett Young walked, again loading the bases
• Mark Sanders walked scoring Thomas Sanders who was running for Evans
• Russ DeVore walked sending Zack home with the winning run

Defensively:
• Hunter threw out runners attempting to steal second in the second and fourth innings

Highlights Included:
• McKay: 3 for 4 with a triple
• Patrick: 1 for 2
• Evans Wellborn: 2/2 with 3 RBI’s
• Hunter Stiles: 1/1 with 2 RBI’s
• James Colquitt: 2/2 with a homerun and 3 RBI’s

The mercy rule was applied as the Spartans picked up their third victory of the season.
