ACAD Habitat is always looking for new projects. If you need something built, we would be more than happy to provide our labor in return for a donation toward our major fundraising goal this year: raising enough money to pay for the construction of a house in Nepal.
See the "Need Something Built?" link to the right (under Categories) for more details on the types of projects we have done in the past and how to get in touch with us.
As one of the four pillars of Habitat for Humanity, fundraising is an integral part of our club's activities. At the end of each year, we make a donation to our local affiliate, Athens Area Habitat for Humanity, as part of our support for their efforts in our community. We are also required to make a tithe to help fund Habitat's global mission by designating funds to be used in a particular country or region. This year, ACAD Habitat's officers wanted to go beyond the requisite 10% international tithe and have established the goal of raising enough money to fully fund the construction of a house in Nepal, which is over $2000. With this larger focus in mind, we are more excited than ever to take on activities and projects, like building playhouses or dog houses and the gym floor project, that will help us reach our goal.

When the Spartan Center floor was replaced in the winter of 2009-2010, the school was kind enough to allow ACAD Habitat to take many of the high-quality maple pieces. We are using these slats and pieces of the actual gym playing surface to make truly unique Spartan keepsakes: picture frames, benches, and tables. This project is part of the Habitat club's fundraising effort and all proceeds from the sale of these items will go toward our annual donation to Athens Area Habitat and our international tithe goal (see the "Fundraising" page for more information).
If you would like more information or if you are interested in purchasing one or more of these items, please contact Beth Sensing at bsensing@athensacademy.org.

Habitat Skillz, August 28, 2010
ACAD Habitat kicked off the year with Habitat Skillz, a building methods tutorial intended to give new, inexperienced, or forgetful members the opportunity to learn some of the key skills needed to be an involved and active member of the club. Techniques practiced included the proper way to hammer a nail, how to remove a nail, and use of a jig saw.

Spartan Center Floor Frames and Bench Build, September 25, 2010
The first frame and bench build of the school year - using wood from the old Spartan Center floor - focused on prepping the wood for construction, including grinding down the staples used to hold the floor in place and sanding the edges of frame pieces.

Recycling Cart Builds, September 25 and October 9, 2010
As part of a revamp of the Upper School campus recycling program, Mr. Snead commissioned three large recycling carts from ACAD Habitat. Club members were eager to take part in the first build of the school year both for the fun they have learning and practicing construction and because their efforts were also serving the school.
