The Meaning of St. Patrick’s Day Essay Contest

A 1000 word essay on the meaning of St. Patrick’s Day could win a prize of $1000 if selected as best by the committee. Students are encouraged to look at the meaning of St. Patrick’s Day from any number of perspectives: historical, religious, sociologic, cultural or multicultural. The Paul Broun Essay contest for 10th District High Schoolers

The Paul Broun Essay contest for 10th District High Schoolers allows students to write an essay of up to 250 words on one of the virtues stated in the Georgia Flag pledge, wisdom, justice, and moderation. Students writing winning essays will receive a flag, a copy of the Constitution, and a signed photo with the Congressman and their favorite teacher or administrator. All essays are due by March 18th. American Legion Oratorical Scholarship

Holocaust Remembrance Project

The Holocaust Remembrance Project is a national essay that is designed to encourage and promote the study of the Holocaust. $100,000 in prizes are available, including all expense paid trips to Washington D.C. See Mr. Stachura for more details.

Colonial Dames Essay Contest

The local Athens Town Committee of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America will award a $50 prize to the first place winner of the essay contest “If you were a presidential candidate, what domestic issue would you consider most important and what would you do about it?” The local Athens winner will then compete to be one of the top three state winners who will win scholarships to a Congressional Seminar in June. The University of Georgia and the Georgia Humanities council are pleased to announce the 26th Annual District I History Day Contest to be held on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at the University of Georgia. History Day provides a unique educational opportunity for the young people in our state to join students from throughout the Unites States in becoming actively involved in local, state, national and world history. Georgetown Essay Contest

The Georgetown Club of Georgia sponsors the Fifth Annual Georgia High School Writing contest with a top prize of $1,000 for the student who submits the best essay in response to the following prompt. “You are the Secretary General of the United Nations in 2007. FRA Americanism Essay Contest Rules

The Fleet Reserve Association, a National organization whose members include active and retired navy, Marin Corps, and Coast Guard personnel, sponsors an Americanism Essay contest each year open to all students grades 7 – 12. The theme for the 2007-08 contest is, “Why I am Proud To Be An American,” and all entries are due December 1, 2007. There will be prizes on the local, regional, and national level with a Grand Prize of $15,000. See Mr. Stachura for more details.

As Secretary General, this is your opportunity to speak out to the entire world about the most important issues facing the international community of nations in 2006.

As you do every year, you choose three topics to address to the world. What would they be? Why are they the most important issues facing the nations of the world in 2006? What do you propose to do to address these issues? You may elaborate on just one topic or up to three topics.

Essay Length: 3 to 5 pages

First Place: $1000 Scholarship
Second Place: $500 Scholarship

Georgia Court of Appeals Centennial Celebration High School Oratorical Contest

As part of its Centennial celebration in 2006, the Court of Appeals of Georgia is sponsoring a statewide high school oratorical contest. The subject of the contest will be the Separation of Powers and the Judicial Branch of Government. Each high school in Georgia, public or private, may certify one winner to advance to the statewide competition, to be held at the State Bar Center in Atlanta on Saturday, September 9, 2006. Eight quarter-finalists will receive scholarship awards. The overall winner will receive a scholarship and an invitation to deliver the winning speech at the Centennial Dinner to be held at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta on October 6, 2006.

Scholarships

The First Place winner will receive a scholarship to be used to pursue education beyond high school at any accredited college or university in the United States in the amount of $7,500. The Second Place winner will receive a scholarship in the amount of $5,000, and the Third Place winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship. Each of the remaining quarter finalists will receive a $500 scholarship.

Topic

The topic for the contest is "The Separation of Powers and the Judicial Branch of Government." The speech must be the original work of the contestant. The speech must be a minimum of 5 minutes and should not exceed 8 minutes.

Eligibility

Contestants must be enrolled in a public or private high school in Georgia and must be under the age of 20 years as of October 6, 2006. To participate in the statewide finals competition, the student must be certified as the winner from his or her high school no later than September 1, 2006.

Judges

All decisions of the judges are final.
