Upper School News

Parents are invited (and encouraged) to attend the Upper School Parents' night on Thursday, August 26th at 7pm in the Presentation Hall. After a brief meeting there, parents will have the opportunity to meet with their children's advisor and teachers. While there will not be enough time to meet with teachers individually, it does provide the opportunity for parents and teachers to forge the relationship necessary to help the children. Further, teachers will be able to share with parents their expectations of the students. It is an important evening and one which I hope you can all attend.

On Wednesday, August 25th at 11am, the annual Upper School Club Draft Assembly will take place in the Presentation Hall. After club leaders present their plans for the year, the entire upper school community will enjoy a BBQ, hosted by the student council, in the amphitheater. During this time students will sign up for clubs in which they have an interest. It is important for students to sign up for clubs in which they will be ACTIVE participants. Signing up and then not being involved serves no purpose and offers no value.

Members of the class of 2011 and their parents should plan to attend SENIOR COLLEGE NIGHT on Monday, August 23rd at 7:30. Mrs. Pruitt and Mr. Stachura will lead a discussion that will facilitate learning about the college admissions process at Athens Academy. This is another step along the path to college admissions. It is a BIG step and this is why we ask that all seniors and at least one parent attend. The meeting will take place in the Presentation Hall.

On April 13th at 7pm in the Presentation Hall, Lauren Winborn will conduct a presentation that could save the life of your child. Her program, http://www.itwonthappentome.org, is presented all across the nation and receives rave reviews. She presented to the Upper School Students a few years ago and raised awareness about the serious responsibilities that come with operating a car. Hurling through space and time at unnatural speeds carries certain risks. These risks CAN be reduced and Lauren will share information with parents that will facilitate very important conversations with children. Below is a quote I shared with Lauren last time she presented-
"As the coordinator of our assembly program, I must say that I think your approach to this sensitive topic hit the mark better than the other people we have had speak to the kids about this subject... Seeing real people and hearing their real stories made the message convincing and powerful... I'm convinced that you saved a life or two that morning."

I remain convinced that her program remains powerful and is one you do NOT want to miss. Please plan to attend and please invite others who have children behind the wheel.

Lauren Winborne will be presenting a powerful program with an important message to parents and students alike. The program http://www.itwonthappentome.org/ will discuss the dangers our children may encounter while driving in cars. She will present to parents on Tuesday, April 13 at 7pm with the hopes that they will engage in conversation with their children AFTER the children listen to her presentation on Wednesday, April 14th during our scheduled chapel period. If you have any questions about this program, please be in touch with Bob Sears. Please help us by spreading the word to those people who have, or will soon have, children behind the wheel.

Dr. Scott and our Interact Club Members recently hosted the District 6910 Interact Banquet on our beautiful springtime campus. Interact clubs from the area came to compete, but more importantly, to work together for the benefit of others. Collectively, the clubs participated in packing 25 crates of earthquake relief supplies for Haiti. They also hosted a formal dress swap with the proceeds from this benefiting Partners in Health in Haiti.

At days end, after fellowship and service, our Interacters, under the leadership of Katie Kalivoda, Christine Shaw, Kena Vyas, Anne Lanier Gilbert, and Alex Pate, took home the grand prize- INTERACT CLUB OF THE YEAR. For their hard work and efforts, they received a check for the Athens Area Homeless Shelter in the amount of $200. While working hard themselves, these students continually spend time working hard for others. They are living examples of the maxim..."Hard work pays off."

Please remember that Wednesday, March 3rd is the day designated for Upper School Conferences. All 9th grade parents and students are asked to conference with their advisor at the same time and location as the fall conferences. The primary focus of spring conferences will be to discuss scheduling for next year and to provide any needed support for the remainder of this year. Please be in touch with your child's advisor to confirm your attendance.

Parents of students in grades 10, 11, and 12 are also asked to conference with advisors if there is a discrepancy with the departmental recommendation sent home during the week of February 22nd or if there is a need to discuss immediate concerns. We stand ready to assist you as you finish this year and plan for the next.

Athens Academy continuously seeks ways to stimulate personal and academic growth for our students. This year, we are very excited to announce the opportunity for a group of Upper School students to travel to Italy during Spring Break, 2010. Athens Academy students and chaperones will spend approximately twelve days in Italy visiting cities like Rome, Florence, Venice and Carpi, our centrally located host city. While in Carpi, the students will live with host families and attend a high school, experiencing cultural immersion. A group of Carpi students will also visit Athens Academy in the next year. Please remember that Monday, October 19th is Safety Night for all 9th graders and new students. The meeting will take place in the Presentation Hall and will begin at 7:30. UGA Police Chief Jimmy Williamson and Clarke County Solicitor General C.R. Chisolm will be speaking about some of the more pressing issues facing young people today. In addition, representatives from Metro Driving will also be here to discuss some of the driving laws teenagers need to be aware. And finally, US Homecoming will be discussed. We look forward to seeing you on this very important evening for you and your child.

The 7th annual Athens Academy Tennis Tournament will take place on Sunday, October 11th and the 12th annual Athens Academy Golf Tournament will take place on Monday, October 12th. Nestled comfortably in between on Sunday, October 11th, 2009 from 5:30pm to 8:30pm will be the second annual Spartan Spectacular. Please know that participation in the Sunday evening festivities (dinner buffet, silent auction, and live music) is not predicated upon your participation on the court or on the course. Come one, come all.....

The Interact service club is doing a project to collect slightly used or cheap books (any kind of books- children, text books, novels, non-fiction, anything!) and also new school supplies (pencils, pens, notebooks, note pads, etc) to send to Liberia. These books need to be collected by Friday, September 25. Any and everything would be greatly appreciated.

Interact is also doing a Christmas Shoe Box collection for St. Bartholemy's school in Terrier Rouge, Haiti. We will collect new balls (especially soccer), stickers, hats, legos, binoculars, toy vehicles, dolls, stuffed animals, hair rubber bands and barrettes, jump ropes, games (marbles, jacks, etc), plastic animals, bracelet and necklace making kits, music boxes and small instruments, kitchen and makeup dressing sets, nice lace socks, clothes, children's underwear, solid soap, coloring books and crayons, watercolors, colored pencils, markers, paper. These items need to be in by Friday, October 2.

Athens Academy and Garnet Ridge Hold Annual Winter Holiday Fest

On Thursday, December 4th, the Athens Academy International Club held its Fifth Annual Winter Holiday Fest at the Garnet Ridge Boys and Girls Club. Academy Upper School students gave presentations on a variety of traditions and celebrations, including Diwali, the Five Pillars of Islam, Chinese New Year, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and Christmas. Garnet Ridge's students, aged 5 through 11, made crafts and played games led by the Academy students before giving a poster presentation on Mexican Christmas and New Year traditions and singing in Spanish and English. The following Athens Academy volunteers wish everyone Happy Holidays and good fortune in the New Year: Malik Obeidin, Margaret Heald, Sara Wetzstein, David Millard, David Cason, Christina Zhang, Ayman Tartir, Simone Smith, and Karishma Sriram. Athens Academy Spanish teacher John Maddox, Boys and Girls Club Director Susan Wilson, and the Garnet Ridge staff chaperoned the event. ¡Feliz año nuevo de parte de los jóvenes de Athens!
