As the devastating news of the Haitian tragedy continues to unfold, we, as a group of individuals, have decisions to make. One of those decisions is if and how we are going to offer our assistance to those 250,000 people in desperate need of food and water and the many more who are now homeless, parentless, and childless. We as a school have decided to unite our efforts on Friday, January 22nd by donating at least $2 to wear a t-shirt for the day. While other school wide efforts are also underway, it is important to know that we have encouraged individual grades in the Upper School to work as group to come up with other ideas that will be beneficial to the people of Haiti. If you would like to assist us in our efforts, please be in touch with Mr. Patrick Snead, Dean of Students, or Mr. Barten Nealy, the Coordinator of Academic and Personal Support.

This year, we are very excited to announce the opportunity for a group of Upper School students to travel to Italy during Spring Break, 2010. Athens Academy students and chaperones will spend approximately twelve days in Italy visiting cities like Rome, Florence, Venice and Carpi, our centrally located host city. While in Carpi, the students will live with host families and attend a high school, experiencing cultural immersion. A group of Carpi students will also visit Athens Academy in the next year. Please review the information listed below to learn more about the plans for this unique opportunity.

The Upper School is pleased to announce the addition of an Equestrian Club to the myriad club offerings on campus. The club will meet regularly during the academic and special interest club meeting times to discuss equine issues of interest to the club members. One goal of the club is to provide an outlet for those students interested in enhancing their equine knowledge through discussion and research. Additionally, the club will have an affiliated Interscholastic Equestrian Association Team sponsored by Four Seasons Farm in Madison. Club members will have the opportunity to join the team and enter shows in competition against other schools in the state, region and country. The Team will practice at Four Seasons Farm, located 15 minutes from the Athens Academy campus, and parents should be in touch with the farm with transportation questions. Team members will ride horses that are owned by Four Seasons Farm for lessons, and compete on unfamiliar horses drawn by lot at the shows. The format is closely aligned with the Intercollegiate riding system, and the team offers a tremendous opportunity for riders to get a leg up on preparation for a college riding program. The team offers a chance for the riders to achieve school recognition for riding, while experiencing the benefits of team camaraderie in a sport that tends to be more geared to the individual. The practices and competitions are all hunt seat equitation riding, but western riders can practice and compete very successfully with the team. All horse enthusiasts are welcome to join the club and/or affiliated team. Student riders of any level may also come just for lessons since competition is not mandatory. The team coaches, Kat DeMas Mulkey and Kimberly Hezzelwood, are looking forward to working with students that would love to ride and have fun doing it! For information about the club, please contact J.P. Watson at jpwatson@athensacademy.org and for information about the team, contact Kat at Four Seasons Farm at 706-474-8490, katdemas@aol.com, or you can check out the farm website at www.fourseasonsfarm.com.
On Friday, November 20th, the upper school community will spend the day serving the greater Athens and Oconee communities. Over the course of this one day we will log approximately 1500 hours worth of service. Our service on this day will benefit hundreds of people for many days to come. It is a hope that our day of service will inspire others to commit to a life of service. For a list of places we will be serving, please click below.

Homecoming 2009 is just around the corner. While talk has already started to occur, the official week begins on Monday, November 2nd and concludes with the homecoming dance at the Tillman Center on Saturday, November 7th. To accommodate for the week's activities, we have altered the schedule. While this schedule has been modified from year's past, it was done so in an effort to maximize homecoming festivities while minimizing disruption to class time. The week's agenda has also been modified this year with the hope that more students will participate in the festivities. Finally, we are selling one school wide t-shirt to commemorate the week long event. To order one of the homecoming t-shirts, bearing the artwork(see chess board image above) of local artist Jamie Calkin, click on the link below.
