Checking Your Webmail Is Easier With Gmail Manager

Do you wish you could be notified of new email messages without having to constantly login and check your Gmail? Well, with the help of a magical little Firefox extension called "Gmail Manager", your wish has come true!

Gmail Manager works by installing a status bar in the bottom right corner of your Firefox browser window. It will display the number of unread messages you have in your inbox, and scrolling over with your mouse will display a short snippet of the first 10 messages, letting you see the date, sender, subject and first line of your emails, all without opening any windows. Clicking on the status bar will open a tab and log in to your email.

There are several settings you can tweak by right-clicking on the status bar and choosing "Preferences," including sound notification and automatic login when you start Firefox. One of the great things about Gmail Manager is it can manage multiple Gmail accounts, so if you have a personal Gmail account as well as your Athens Academy webmail, you can check them all quickly and easily without opening multiple tabs (this feature is for Gmail accounts only.)

Installation is easy --- just visit https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1320 and click the "Install Now" button. Once it installs, it will prompt you to restart Firefox, and once it restarts there will now be an envelope icon in the bottom right corner. Click on this icon to add your Athens Academy webmail account and any other Gmail accounts you may have, set up the preferences as you like them and you're done!

How To Get Academy Mail on iPhone

1. Tap Mail from your iPhone's Home screen.
2. Tap Other.
3. Select POP from the tab menu.
4. Fill in your name, address, and description in the appropriate fields. The Address field should be your full email address (username@athensacademy.org).
5. Under Incoming Mail Server, fill in the Host Name field as pop.gmail.com.
6. In the User Name field, enter 'recent:' followed by your full username (recent:username@athensacademy.org). This will enable POP Recent mode, which will give you a better experience on the iPhone.
7. Under Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), fill in the Host Name field as smtp.gmail.com.
8. Tap Save.

If you notice that messages you send from your iPhone are appearing in your iPhone's inbox, please note that this POP behavior is a result of enabling Recent mode to ensure that all other POP clients will be able to access your messages. Google is aware of this issue and thanks you for your patience while they address this issue.

"THESE ARE GREAT! Now wait... where do I find them again?" That has been #1 the question heard as more and more teachers are introduced to the fabulous video tutorials put together by the Media & Technology department. Hopefully, we have solved the problem!

To help ease confusion, we have added a link called "Tutorials" to both the Faculty & Staff and Student homepages. This will be the central repository for training materials (print manuals, videos, etc.) that we produce. Currently, we have tutorials for MovableType, Gallery, and RSS information as well as links to library materials related to research for students. When you get a chance, check it out!

As always, if we create a new tutorial, we'll continue to announce it on the Tech Tips blog.
