Opening Reception for Steve Penley

Please join us Wednesday, February 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m., for the opening reception honoring artist Steve Penley, whose paintings will be on display in the Myers Gallery through April 3. At the reception, Vince Dooley will be on hand to sign copies of his book Dooley’s Play Book, which was illustrated by Steve Penley. In addition, Penley will sign copies of his own book, The Reconstruction of America.

Steve Penley was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and grew up in Macon, Georgia, and he admits that his artwork is influenced by modern American culture. According to Penley’s website, “television imagery was a heavy influence on his life, and probably had a major impact on his choice of subject matter.” Penley studied at the University of Georgia and the School of Visual Art in New York City, later returning to Atlanta, where he has “picked up on pop art’s imagery…He has chosen subjects familiar to everyone, subjects that are already imprinted on the viewers’ minds.”

Penley’s private collectors include Coca-Cola, the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, Morgan Keegan, The Booth Museum, ESPN Zone, and Mercer University. He has had exhibitions at the Smith Gallery and the Matre Gallery, both in Atlanta; the Anthem Gallery in New York City; and the Meridian International Center in Washington, D.C.

The Myers Gallery is located in the Science and Art Building on the Athens Academy campus, 1281 Spartan Lane. The gallery’s regular hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. For more information, please call 706-549-9225.
