Athens Academy biology teacher Richard J. Patterson was recently selected as the statewide winner of the 2006-07 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. This award is given annually to one teacher from each state who has shown excellence in Advanced Placement instruction. Amanda Beaton from the Siemens Foundation presented Mr. Patterson with this award at the Athens Academy Honors Day Ceremony on Friday, May 25, 2007.

Mr. Patterson has been valuable member of the Athens Academy faculty for 30 years. He teaches AP Biology and ninth grade biology and also serves as the chairman of the science department. Mr. Patterson is the sponsor of the Upper School Judiciary Board, a student advisor, and coach of the track team. According to Upper School Director J.P. Watson, “Mr. Patterson plays an essential role in the life of Athens Academy as a positive role model to his students, faculty colleagues, and the administration. His enthusiasm for his subject matter, and most importantly, his enthusiasm for his students, is unparalleled.”

The Siemens Award for Advanced Placement recognizes one AP teacher from each state for his or her “exemplary teaching and enthusiastic dedication to AP both inside and outside the classroom.” Faculty members are nominated based on their history of student performance, and the school then endorses the nomination by writing letter of recommendation and providing supporting documentation.
