Spanish Students Win Contest
Athens Academy third and fourth graders took all of the state-level prizes in Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES) poster contest. The contest is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP). Third graders Will Eskew, Colin Murphy, and Kerrigan Pruett won first, second, and third places for their grade level, and fourth graders Suzanne Herrin, William Leverett, and Richard Ferguson won first, second, and third places for their grade level. At the national level, Suzanne Herrin placed third for the fourth grade and Will Eskew placed third for the third grade.
According to Lower School Spanish teacher Crysal Vicente, “The purpose of the poster contest is to get the students thinking about why we need to learn a foreign language. We brainstorm all of the possible benefits and make a list. The students then choose one idea to use to create a poster.” The best posters are then sent on to the Georgia Chapter of AATSP. They are entered into a contest with elementary schools from all over Georgia. Then the best poster from each grade is sent to the National AATSP Contest.
