Seniors Tapped for Cum Laude Society

In the nineteenth annual Cum Laude Society lecture and induction ceremony on April 19, fifteen members of the Class of 2007 were tapped for membership. As the secondary school equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa, Cum Laude recognizes superior academic achievement and sound character. Victoria Adams, Helena Anderson, Phil Brudney, Lucy Fu, David Hou, Tom Johnson, Matt Leonard, Brandon Lou, Carley Moore, Allison O’Rear, Surili Sheth, Trey Sinyard, Neeraj Sriram, Emily Westberry, and Chenzi Xu were each tapped for membership.
This year’s Cum Laude speaker was Dean Rebecca White, the J. Alton Hosch Professor of Law and Dean of the School of Law at the University of Georgia. Dean White is also the parent of Athens Academy alumni Brandon White ’02 and Maren White ’05.
In 1988, Athens Academy became the seventh school in Georgia to be chartered for Cum Laude. There are now eight chapters statewide.

Middle School Films Selected for Teen Screen

Two films produced by Athens Academy students, Superman Saves the Day and True Love, have been selected to screen during Teen Screen, a non-competition sidebar of the 31st Annual Atlanta Film Festival, April 19-28, 2007. The films were produced last year by eighth graders Lisa Sheppard, Blake Sinyard, Hays Sligh, Thomas Sanders, Emily O'Rear, Elizabeth Boswell, Madison Linck, Max Schein, Lillian Jones, Taylor Williams, Jeremy Burgess, and Caroline Lewis.
Throughout January, February, and March, a screening committee comprised of local film and video makers, programmers, curators, and media professionals screened hundreds of submissions from across the country and made their selections for this festival. The Teen Screen films will be shown at Landmark Midtown Art Cinema from Monday, April 23-Friday, April 27.

Dr. Andy Keller Speaks to Eighth Graders

Alumnus Andy Keller '00 spoke to the eighth grade classes at Athens Academy in December, just before he was deployed to Balad Air Force Base in Iraq. Dr. Keller, who serves as an Air Force flight surgeon with the 58th Rescue Squadron, shared with the students how his education at Athens Academy prepared him for medical school. He also explained his recent training for deployment, what his mission would be, and what equipment he would be using in Iraq.
This spring, Dr. Keller sent the class a flag that had flown over the hospital at Balad Air Force Base. Pictured are the eighth grade students with the flag.

Stuart Todd Wins Awards

Stuart Todd, director of admissions and athletics for Athens Academy, recently received the State Award of Merit from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). He accepted his award in March in Savannah. Todd was also named Region 8-A Athletic Director of the Year.
The NIAAA State Award of Merit is presented annually by each state to an individual who is an NIAAA member and is deemed by the state association to have performed meritorious service to the state.
