Athens Academy Wins President's Challenge for Fifth Consecutive Year

Athens Academy has been named the Georgia State Champion in the President’s Challenge Physical Activity and Fitness Awards Program for the fifth consecutive school year. Students in grades 1-8 participate in this program through their physical education classes, coordinated by department chairman Mr. Don Chuboff.

Since its inception in 1966, the President’s Challenge Physical Activity and Fitness Awards Program has challenged America’s young people to raise their activity and fitness to the next level. The Physical Fitness Test recognizes students for their outstanding level of physical fitness in five events: curl-ups or partial curl-ups, shuttle run, endurance run/walk, pull-ups or right angle push-ups, and V-sit or sit and reach.

The goal of physical education at Athens Academy is to expose students to activities that will enhance personal fitness and wellness for the rest of their life. To accomplish these goals, students work regularly on fitness, strength building, and flexibility. A major goal for the physical education program is to instill a love of movement in each student so that the stage is set for a lifetime of participation in sport and for related leisure activities. According to Middle School Director Brenda Klein, “By setting high standards in daily rigor and long range goals, our physical education staff has enabled our students to achieve much more than what they might have expected.”
