Alumni Art Exhibits in Myers Gallery

A reception will be held honoring Athens Academy alumni Scott Tasker and John Morris on Friday, September 15, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Also being honored are Jim Talley-Unique Turnings and Rob Matre. The public is invited to attend.
Tasker and Morris will be displaying their photographic art in the Myers Gallery on the campus of Athens Academy. This is Tasker’s photography debut; his background in architecture combines with his love of the outdoors to create beautiful and moving art. Cities come alive through Scott’s work and the purity and rawness found only in nature are captured in enchanting vignettes. John Morris and Christina Ayala exhibit photos and drawings from their on-going telepathic communication project. The exhibit includes an opportunity to take part in the project; one person concentrates on sending a telepathic message while the other draws the message they receive—no words are spoken.
Both exhibits are available for public viewing through October 13, 2006, in the Myers Gallery at Athens Academy. The work of wood turner Jim Talley–Unique Turnings and the photography of Rob Matre will be exhibited in the Bertelsmann Gallery during this time.

Students Travel to India

In August, a group of Athens Academy students and advisors returned from a two-week trip to India. The group, guided by Dr. and Mrs. Ranjit Mathew, used this trip as an opportunity for a cultural and service exchange. They began their visit by traveling to Pallam, a small fishing village on the coast of the Arabian Sea which had suffered damage during the 2004 tsunami. In Pallam, Academy students learned much about the Indian culture and were also able to help the local school with some of their technology needs. The students have also formed a partnership to help the Indian school open a library. Other highlights of the trip included a chance to meet with Indian President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and a visit to Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal.
The Athens Academy students who traveled to India included twelfth graders Hayley Brown, Sharon Covington, Allison O’Rear, Surili Sheth, and Blair Terry; eleventh graders Jarrard Cole and Ellis Tomporowski; tenth grader Jess Marano; and 2006 graduate Ankur Mathew. Their advisors included Dr. and Mrs. Mathew, and Mrs. Sally Harris and her husband, Mr. Ernie Harris.
