New for Upper School Summer Reading--CHOICE BOOKS!

Would you read for fun in the summer? How about for ice cream...?

Here's what's new for Upper School Summer Reading. As usual, all Upper School students will read the required book or books assigned for their grade level or class, and should be prepared to write about or take a test on that book in the first couple of weeks of school. But this year, all Upper School students are also encouraged to choose at least one book from the titles recommended on the Choice Books list (available on the Media Center webpage. See Reading Lists, Upper School). You may choose any book that you like, regardless of your grade level.

If you become part of the “choice" group, you will be asked to speak briefly about the extra book you read in your English class in the first week or two of school. This will not be a formal report or a presentation, only a quick book talk in which you tell what the book was about, describe some of the characters, maybe read an interesting or exciting scene from the book, etc. (Tips on giving a successful book talk will be posted on the Media Center webpage—see Reading Lists, Upper School.) You might be given some extra credit points for your book talk (this is at your teacher’s discretion).

Then….you will be invited to an ice cream party! Students who read a choice book and talk about it in class will be invited to a party sponsored by the Media Center at which ice cream will be served and you will be celebrated. Please join us! And this summer, keep reading!

Summer Reading Book Sale!

Rising 6th - 12th graders and their parents are invited to shop for summer reading choice books! The “bookstore” will be in the Print Media Center in the Middle/Upper School Library, and bookstore hours are:

Wednesday, May 14 – Friday, May 16
8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Students may also come browse the books during their break time and with their class. When the books have been selected, a library staff member will assist in filling out the order form. Forms will be sent home with the students for a parent’s signature, and should be returned to the library on Monday, May 19, please, so that the books can be ordered that day. The price of the books will be charged to the student’s Athens Academy account, and books will be distributed during the last week of school.

Reading lists can be found on the Athens Academy webpage. From the home page, choose the Parents page (under School Community), then click on Reading Lists on the left-hand side of the page. Please note that required summer reading books for Middle School will be ordered by the PSO; the book sale referenced above is for the choice books only. All Upper School books can be purchased through the Summer Reading Bookstore.

Banned Books Week--Celebrate Your Freedom to Read

We will observe Banned Books Week in the Media Center from Sunday, Sept. 30 - Saturday, Oct. 6. This annual event has been sponsored by the American Library Association since 1982, and is intended to remind us each the importance of our First Amendment rights, to recognize the power of literature, and to draw attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society. Come learn more in the library!
