Students recognized by NASA

Congratulations to Bailey Carter and Grace Trimpe for receiving recognition from NASA for the Buzz Lightyear Mission Patch Design Challenge! Grace and Bailey were two of over 600 students across the nation to create a design. Their designs were selected as "top 10 entries."

See the top 10 finalists here.

Excerpt from the NASA website:
"For nearly 40 years, NASA astronauts have designed mission patches to symbolize their individual space missions and flight accomplishments. Carrying on this tradition, Disney Parks and NASA launched a search for the most creative mission patch design to honor Buzz Lightyear as America's first and longest-serving space ranger. After serving 15 galactic months aboard the International Space Station, the 12-inch action figure returned to Earth in September 2009, aboard space shuttle Discovery with the crew of STS-128.

Students from across the nation submitted designs and a brief essay to commemorate Buzz Lightyear's achievement. As part of the Buzz Lightyear Mission Patch Design Challenge, students had the opportunity to learn about the requirements of spaceflight and the science surrounding NASA programs, helping to create a strong understanding about the importance of space exploration."

Middle School Haiti Relief Efforts

As the world watches the tragedy which is occurring as a result of the Haiti earthquake, the Middle School has been raising money to help the American Red Cross with relief efforts. In a special assembly, several 8th grade students made a presentation to the student body to educate them on Haiti and what has occurred there. Their presentation helped increase awareness and answer many of the questions Middle School students had.

Students have also lead the Middle School in two fundraisers which will help support the American Red Cross in their disaster relief program. Each grade has been collecting coins in gallon jugs. This will end Friday, January 29. Additionally, all Middle School students participated in a t-shirt day on Friday, January 22. Students donated money and an extra t-shirt to have their own t-shirt and jeans day. This fundraiser helped raise $711 of aid. These are two small ways our students have expressed their support for the Haitian people.

Continuing Dr. King's legacy...

During the month of January, we will continue in the tradition of Dr. King by focusing on Civil Rights and Service to the Community. We have community leaders scheduled as guest speakers for chapel programs and on January 29, all Middle School grade levels will watch a video from the "Teaching Tolerance" series on Civil Rights. Afterward, students and teachers will reflect on the videos and discuss the destructiveness of hateful behaviors.

Fifth, sixth and seventh grade students have just finished our annual Toy Drive for the Salvation Army. Footballs, board games, stuffed animals, and other toys were collected by homerooms and delivered to be distributed to needy families in the Athens area. On Saturday, Dec. 5th, the 5th/6th grade Sparbots team competed at one of nine Regional FLL (FIRST Lego League) tournaments at Conyers, Ga. The team finished in the top 10 out of 27 teams to qualify for a Super-Regional FLL Tournament to be held in Atlanta on January 9, 2010. In addition to qualifying, the team won a special, 3rd place award for Engineering Design and Programming for a unique use of multiple sensors for keeping their robot oriented on a obstacle course in autonomous operation.
The theme for this year's competition was called "Smart Move" which required students to research transportation issues in their community. The Sparbots chose to research commuter rail issues and learned about Athens plans for rail by visiting the Multi-Modal Transportation Center in downtown Athens.

Middle School Mixes it Up @ Lunch!

Ask your student where everyone sits during lunch and I bet they can tell you which "group" sits at what table. Well, today students were assigned random seats in the Tillman Center and asked to work on an activity together. The point of all of this is to encourage the students to cross social boundaries and sit and talk with people they may not know all that well in a safe and supportive environment.
