ATHENS ACADEMY IEA MIDDLE SCHOOL EQUESTRIAN TEAM RESERVE CHAMPIONS AT NATIONALS!!!!

The Athens Academy IEA Middle School Equestrian team traveled to Syracuse, New York on April 18-22 to compete in the 2012 Interscholastic Equestrian Association National Finals. The competition consisted of IEA teams from all over the country that had to qualify first through their Regional Finals and then through their Zone Finals to win a spot at the prestigious National Finals. At Nationals, just as at all IEA shows throughout the year, the riders draw for their horses and must compete an unfamiliar mount in an equitation over fences or flat class.

Athens Academy was Reserve Champion Middle School Hunt Seat Team, competing with the top 20 teams from across the country. The team actually tied for First Place with Storybook Farm from Charleston, South Carolina, earning the same number of points throughout the competition. Storybook Farm won the tiebreaker, which is determined by the number of first place ribbons. Storybook had 2 wins while Athens Academy had one. The team consists of girls from several schools in the area. Representing Athens Academy is sixth grader, Katie Phillips.

The competition finished up on Sunday with the Equitation on the Flat classes. Each rider had to first make it through a semi-final heat by placing in the top 4 out of 10 riders. The finalists then redrew for another mount and competed in a final flat class of 8 riders to determine the national placings. Katie Phillips made it to the Finals. Katie placed 4th in the Beginner Equitation on the Flat finals with a beautiful ride.

The 2 year old Athens Academy Team began their season in September 2011 with the team traveling around the state to compete in numerous meets. The team had several accomplishments during the year by placing 1st at all of their meets with the exception of one where they placed 2nd. They placed 1st in the Region Finals in March of this year making them Regional Champions, and they placed 2nd at the Zone Finals. The girls work extremely hard during the year, sometimes taking lessons, free riding and showing 6 days a week. They are responsible for the care of their horses and take great pride with the horses in the program. It is a huge commitment for these athletes and their coaches.

"We could not be more thrilled", said Coach Kristi Roberson. "All our hard work and preparation paid off, and I am so proud of each girl that competed. I know the girls and I will have memories of this trip that will last a lifetime."

The Athens Academy team rides out of Four Seasons Farm in Madison, Georgia and is coached by Kat DeMas Mulkey and Kristi Roberson. For more information, please see our Facebook page or you can visit the website at www.fourseasonsfarm.com.

Uniform and Spirit wear Re-Sale

We are looking forward to our first Athens Academy uniform and spirit wear re-sale. The sale will take place from 3:00pm - 6:00pm on April 25 and 26 in the Spartan Center. Please take a second to read this email for details and information regarding the sale.

Volunteers Needed!

We are seeking parents helpers for the 24th and 25th for set up (12:00-3:00 each day) and the 25th and 26th for the sale (3:00-6:00). In addition to the service you are providing the school, all volunteers will be able to visit the sale early to have first choice on sale items. If you are interested in volunteering, please email Geoffrey Walton at gwalton@athensacademy.org.

How do I donate clothes and Spirit items?

Any uniform items or PSO Spirit wear items may be donated. We ask that donated items be free of stains and holes and be on a hanger. During carpool drop off on the mornings of the April 24 and 25, 7th grade students will be located at all carpool locations (Media Center, MS turn around, Old Gym, LS carpool, and Harrison Center). They will collect the clothes and will hand out a "ticket" to any families who donate clothes. That ticket will allow those families who donated clothes to attend the sale on April 25. Bus riders, or students who miss drop off time, can turn clothes into the Lower School office and will receive a ticket at that time.

Hangers??

In an effort to keep the clothes organized, we are asking that all items be cleaned and hung. This will help keep the sizes ordered and parents will be able to move through the sale in less time. If you do not have hangers, you may still donate clothes. If you have extra hangers, we'll take them! You may donate them with the uniforms on the 24th and 25th.

How do I purchase?

All uniform items can be purchased for $5, all spirit wear, sweatshirts and jackets can be purchased for $10, and accessories (belts, ties, scarves, etc) will cost $2. You may pay for the items with cash, check, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, and American Express). We will not be able to bill student accounts.

Sizes and Returns:

There will be space for students to try on clothes to test for sizes. We will not be able to accept returns once uniforms have been purchased.

When can I attend?

1) Parents who volunteer to work the sale will be able to purchase clothes prior to the sale beginning.
2) Parents who donate clothes on the 24th or 25th can attend the sale from 3:00pm-6:00pm on April 25th
3) All parents can attend from 3:00pm - 6:00pm on April 26th.

If you have other questions, please email Geoffrey Walton at gwalton@athensacademy.org.

Students look forward to class trips

Seventh grade students and their parents will meet on Thursday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Presentation Hall to make final plans for their trip to Washington, DC. All students should attend accompanied by a parent. During the program students will make presentations on their preparation for the trip. The group will depart on Sunday morning and return Friday afternoon.

The sixth grade class culminates their study of early American history by visiting Savannah and learning more about the colonization of Georgia. They will visit museums, forts, an historic home and a plantation, and several churches. Additionally, they look forward to a beach ecology study, a riverboat cruise, and a square dance.

Eighth grade students will be found on Lookout Mountain next week at Camp Desoto. They will participate in a variety of outdoor adventures and spend time in conversation with Upper School student and faculty leaders as they continue the transition from Middle to Upper School.

While the three classes are away from campus, the fifth graders also have some special surprises, including Science Day, Manor Day, and Fun Day!
