Athletic Update

On Tuesday, January 10, the GHSA Executive Committee met in Macon and approved splitting public and private schools during the state tournament within Class A for ALL athletic and extracurricular activities. This major change will affect Athens Academy, as well as all Class A schools, but to what extent is still up in the air.

Below is a list of a few responsibilities and actions which will need to be addressed quickly by the state office:

•	16 public schools and 16 private schools will participate in their own state championship.
•	The regular season is untouched by the decision to split public and private schools in the playoffs.
•	The GHSA office has the primary responsibility of setting up the structure for playoff competitions.
•	All Class A schools were surveyed to get a commitment regarding which sports/activities they will compete in next year. (Notification deadline is early February, but we have not received the results as of yet.)
•	On a sport-by-sport basis, determine the format for how the 16 playoff teams will be selected. (Probable deadline is late February.)
•	Present all plans to the GHSA State Executive Committee in March. (Committee meets March 18 & 19.)

Since January 10, there have been more questions asked by member schools than answers provided by the state office. Here is a list of unanswered questions:

•	What will happen with Class A/AA Volleyball and Class A-AAAA Swimming and Diving? Allow the public and private to play each other for the title or split them up?
•	How will Cross Country, Golf, and Track & Field state qualifiers be determined?
•	Will the GHSA continue to host championships for ALL classes at the same site for CC, T&F, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Football, Volleyball, and Wrestling? Basketball is currently hosted at two sites, but will this forma continue?
•	What happens to public school sports which do not field enough participation to qualify for a state tournament? For example, there are not enough public schools playing soccer for the GHSA to recognize it as a state champion.
•	Will the seasons start later or end earlier for Class A, since only 16 teams advance to the playoffs, making the playoffs one week shorter than other classifications?
•	Do we compete for one region championship or will we have separate championships?
There could possibly be post-region tournament games which must be played to determine seeding for the state tournament. For example, if AA and PACS both lose in a region semifinal contest to public schools how will we determine who is #1 and #2 for the private state qualifiers? This may not apply to our region but it could for some other regions for either public or private schools.
•	What steps should fall sport coaches/athletic directors take in preparing schedules for the upcoming school year?
•	Will the GHSA continue to provide the same media coverage for state championships within seven classes as they have done with the current five classes? Examples include television, webcasting, etc.

As you can see, there are numerous questions and concerns on the minds of schools throughout the state of Georgia. Rest assured Athens Academy will continue to provide our student/athletes with the best possible competitive opportunities available. Athens Academy's goal will continue to be striving to bring people together rather than separating into different groups.

Go Spartans!

Coach's Spotlight - Beth Sensing

1.	Name: Beth Sensing

2.	Hometown: Hockessin, DE

3.	College(s): Amherst College, B.A.
Vanderbilt University, M.A.

4.	Years at Athens Academy: 7

5.	Family: Parents and brothers all hundreds of miles away

6.	Memorable high school athletic moment:
Unfortunately none of my high school teams were very good, so nothing really sticks out (though there was a fist fight during one of my soccer games freshman year). But I did play in the Div. 3 NCAA Championship game in Field Hockey in college - we lost, but we had some really intense wins to get there.

7.	What was the color and model of your 1st car and what do you remember about it?
1989 Maroon Toyota Camry; my brother drove it for two years before I got it and I had to push the brake pedal down about 5 inches before any slowing down occurred.

8.	How do you like to spend your free time?
No answer

9.	What is your “Special Spartan Moment”?
Making the state tournament last year - the girls were all so excited and they all felt how significant it was to each member of the team and for the program as a whole.

10.	What would you consider to be unique about Athens Academy?
The closeness that develops among our whole student body and between the faculty and students; and that our students are able to be involved in so many different activities and to experience so many great things while here.

11.	What subject(s) do you teach?
World History (9th grade)

12.	What do you enjoy about your academic discipline?
Understanding the past helps us to understand how we got to where we are today; understanding other cultures (and our own) is essential to being an informed global citizen; plus, history is full of compelling people and stories, and some really bizarre moments.

13.	What sport(s) do you coach?
Assistant Varsity and JV Girls Basketball

2.	Hometown: New Marlborough, MA

3.	College(s): Kenyon College

4.	Years at Athens Academy: First year

5.	Family: 3 brothers and 1 sister and I'm the middle child.

6.	Memorable high school athletic moment:
Going to the New England prep school championships with my high school field hockey team in my senior year.

7.	What was the color and model of your 1st car and what do you remember about it?
My first car was a 1988 Volvo 240 station wagon and I remember the sunroof leaked whenever it rained.

8.	What is your “Special Spartan Moment?”
The phone call I received from Mr. Chambers telling me I had gotten the job.

9.	What would you consider to be unique about Athens Academy?
I think being near the University of Georgia attracts a unique student and faculty body which in turn creates the unique, vibrant school community one senses from his or her first steps on campus.

10.	What subject(s) do you teach?
10th grade English

11.	What do you enjoy about your academic discipline?
I enjoy the fact that there is never a right or wrong answer in English, at least in the traditional sense, and this sense of freedom to explore ideas is really inspiring.

JV Girls' Soccer

Coach's Spotlight - Steve Stewart

1.	Name: Steve Stewart

2.	Hometown: Pineville, Ky.

3.	College(s): Brevard College, Brevard N.C.
George Mason University, Fairfax Va.
University of Florida, the "real" Gainesville

4.	Years at Athens Academy: 10

5.	Family: My daughter, Whitney, is currently a freshman at Athens Academy

My older brother and his family still live where we grew up in Vero Beach, Florida and my 9 year old niece goes to my old school which is very much like Athens Academy

6.	Memorable high school athletic moment:
For me my most memorable athletic moment was from college I think, not high school... we played Presbyterian in S.C. in my first game of college soccer and we drew but I scored a goal from 35 yds. against the wind. Any other day it would have gone over the goal I think but I acted as if I intended the dip at the end. I was not well practiced at celebration though...

7.	What was the color and model of your 1st car and what do you remember about it?
My first car was a 1965 VolksWagon beetle. I paid for it with cash from my first job. It was "primer" red and had the gas tank in the front under the hood. The passenger-side door had badly rusted hinges so I had it welded shut. This produced an authentic NASCAR entry feeling for the passengers going in and out through the window.

It was clearly a "chick-magnet" during my senior year of high school!

8.	How do you like to spend your free time?
What is this?

9.	What is your “Special Spartan Moment”?
My third year at the school, I was with the girls' soccer program and we were heading to Brookstone to play the state semi-finals. We probably were the top team in the state in all classifications and had five Division I players, two of which were the strikers. Both had missed the Brookstone match the previous year for vacation and suspension when we had played the same team and won 3-0. Prior to the play-off game, I talked to both coaches from the opposing team and they were both very confident that a year later they could beat our team. I realized that they had no idea what was about to occur...we were up 9-0 just after halftime...and we could have won by the mercy rule. They asked after the game where the two girls who created so many goals had come from, I just said "oh, that's right you didn't see them last year."

10.	What would you consider to be unique about Athens Academy?
The size of the school and the individual experience that each student receives make this a great place.

11.	What subject(s) do you teach?
U.S. History
Political Science
Economics

12.	What do you enjoy about your academic discipline?
Since every other discipline is merely a subordinate course for History, everything relates to what we learn. It makes the study of the humanities very relevant for the students.

13.	What sport(s) do you coach?
Girls Soccer

1.	Name: Stefan Billmayer

2.	Hometown: Huntsville, Alabama

3.	College(s): University of Alabama Huntsville,
University of Georgia

4.	Years at Athens Academy: 9

5.	Family: My wife Betsy is also a teacher at Athens Academy; teaching 2nd grade
I have three boys, also at Athens Academy.
Alex - 7th grade
Nicholas - 4th grade
Hanns - Kindergarten

6.	Memorable high school moment: Well . . . barring graduation, the senior prom, and countless adventures with friends and teammates out of school, I would have to recall memorizing the entire"Prologue" from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales on a challenge from my senior English teacher Dr. Schnell. After performing it in the hall for her and any that passed by, I knew that I was destined for literature . . . WHAN that Aprille with his shoures soote. The droghte of Marche hath perced to the roote, And bathed every veyne in swich licour, Of which vertu engendred is the flour . . .

7.	What was the color and model of your 1st car and what do you remember about it?
My first car was a white 1971 MG Midget. It was in great shape including spoke wheels and a roll bar. Being a British car, it needed weekly maintenance that taught me patience and how to work with my hands. I'm not sure my German engineer father loved it as much as I did.

8.	How do you like to spend your free time?
When I'm not coaching the high school boys, I love to coach my own boys on their club teams. I'm always looking for a good hike in the mountains or spending time at the lake with my family.

9.	What is your “Special Spartan Moment”?
Hmm . . . as a teacher and coach, how do you have just one? I truly have many, but I suppose it is quite rewarding to see kids that I have taught and/or coached graduate. A graduating student is such a collective effort of all the teachers, parents, administrators and staff. I makes me proud to know that I contribute a piece of each student's potential to become whatever they set their minds to.

One moment that I will forever remember was this past year's game against former state champion Thomasville High School. On one hand, a 1-0 loss in the final minutes of the game for a Final Four slot was devastating, but on the other, I knew that we outplayed them throughout the match and witnessed incredible, heart, character, skill, and determination from our Athens Academy boys

10.	What would you consider to be unique about Athens Academy?
Athens Academy is a school dedicated the individual growth of each student. There are so many great teachers at this school who really make a personal effort to make sure each student is getting what they need to become successful. As a father of three Athens Academy Spartans, I am thrilled they are here!
