A Toby Show
The middle school production of A Toby Show opens this month. This play by Aurand Harris is designed as a tribute to the theatrical productions of Vaudeville. Vaudeville shows were a combination of carnival and theatre. While watching a play, you might also see jugglers, animal acts, dancers, gymnasts, singers, dancers and more. A Toby Show is also a tribute to the stock character of Toby - a well-loved character of the vaudeville stage. A mischievous, clever, and funny character with signature red hair and overalls, Toby was loved by audiences of all ages and backgrounds. He was the early twentieth century equivalent to commedia's Arlecchino. Complete with entre acts, this play is a great tribute to the theatrical stylings of yesteryear.
Show dates are February 11- 13, 2010. All shows are in the Athens Academy Presentation Hall. Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. Canned food donations will be accepted at the door.

The Middle School is holding auditions for the Winter Play! This year we are doing a production of "A Toby Show" by Aurand Harris. The show features a traveling circus group with acts like a magic show, a comedy duo, a dance team and a ventriloquist! During this play, Toby, a circus performer and professional country bumpkin, finds himself getting involved with a family in town, a family we are all very familiar with. Plot twists and turns will keep the audience laughing!
Auditions will be held on December 10 and 11 in the Presentation Hall from 3:30-5:30. Everyone interested in auditioning should try to come both audition days - more opportunities to read from the script! We also need everyone interested in crew to come by the auditions on either day and fill out a crew form.
There will be a meeting for the parents of all cast and crew on Monday, December 14 at 4:30 in the Presentation Hall.
The first semester Advanced Acting Class is proud to present Snapshots: Classical on Dec. 10 at 7:30 in the Presentation Hall. In this showcase, students will be performing various monologues from the works of William Shakespeare. Performers will be Anne Lanier Gilbert, Chase Brantley, Becca Schell, Sofie Wasserman-Smith, Cate Jackson, Christine Shaw, Mary Katherine Malone, and Billy Pate. Admission is free and open to the public. These students will also be competing in the Georgia Shakespeare Annual High School competition to be held on February 20, 2010.
The Annual Freshman Film Festival is set for December 9 at 7:30 in the Presentation Hall. The film shorts to be shown are those made by this year's freshman film class. This festival is open to family and friends.
Athens Academy’s one act play, "The Tragedy of Thebes", placed second in the state at the Georgia High School Association’s One Act Play Competition. The Class A division competition was held on Saturday, November 14, at Warner Robins High School. Brookstone Academy took first place, and other competing schools included Lincoln County High School, The Walker School, Bremen High School, DeKalb School of the Arts, Irwin County High School, and Jenkins County High School. “The work the kids did on Saturday was beyond amazing,” says Drama Department Chair Lorraine Thompson. “They really gave their best performance.”
On November 4, 2009 Athens Academy played host to the GHSA One Act Competition. Eight schools competed for the judges. Participating schools were Lakeview Academy, Rabun Gap, Hebron Academy, Athens Christian, Commerce, Prince Avenue, Athens Academy and Tallulah Falls. At the end of the day, Hebron Academy placed 3rd, Lakeview placed 2nd and Athens Academy won the 1st place title. Individual acting awards were also given to Athens Academy students. Ansley McAlister, CJ Brown, and Nick Bradfield were selected for the "All Star Cast", Billy Pate received the "Best Actor" award and Christine Shaw received the "Best Actress" award. Athens Academy's show, "The Tragedy of Thebes", will now go on to compete at the state level. This phase of the competition will be held on November 14 at Warner Robins High School in Warner Robins, Georgia. Kudos to the cast and crew!
