"The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail"
by Jerone Lawrence and Robert E. Lee
This play was written and first produced in the early 1970's. It celebrates the life and writings of Henry David Thoreau. The play covers several areas: literary, historical, political, and the philosophical. It portrays the issues surrounding the jailing of Thoreau for refusing to pay his taxes in protest to the US involvement in the Mexican War. From this event came his work "On the Duty of Civil Disobedience" published in 1849.
